Net Positive Consulting Engineers provided full mechanical design services for the renovation of the UA Local 246 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Training Center, transforming a portion of the existing facility into a cutting-edge Measurement and Verification Testing Lab.
The new training center features a fully functional central plant – complete with a water-cooled chiller, cooling tower, condensing boiler, and a comprehensive pumping and filtration system – all configured in a four-pipe arrangement to simulate real-world hydronic systems. The air-handling systems include chilled and hot water coils, VAVs with reheat, sound attenuation, and diffusers designed to meet Title 24 economizer standards.
What sets this project apart is its purpose-built nature: every component was designed for hands-on instruction and system testing. Trainees gain direct experience balancing, commissioning, and troubleshooting modern HVAC systems, including a sophisticated control network integrating Distech Controls, Facility Explorer, and pneumatic systems – mirroring the diversity of platforms found in the field.
Net Positive led the schematic design, construction documents, and control system design, coordinating with electrical and structural subconsultants to ensure full functionality and safe integration of all systems. The result is a one-of-a-kind educational environment that equips the next generation of trades professionals with the technical expertise to master evolving building systems.
